Greetings in Jesus’ name! カンボジアでは毎日雨が降り何もかもが赤土によってドロドロに染まりゲートウェイの敷地までもが頻繁に浸水しています。そんな中子供たちは新学年度を迎えようとしています。初日となる10月1日に張り出されるクラス表を見るまでは進級したのか留年したのかハッキリしない子供がまだ二名いますが“ほぼ”全員進級です。

早いもので子供たちを受け入れ始めてこの8月で3年が経ちました。これまでに受け入れたすべての子供が今日もゲートウェイに留まっているとするなら40人は超えています。しかし残念ながらゲートウェイでの生活はつらいと捉える子供が少なからずいました。それでも浮き沈みを経て主は祝福して下さり、確実に“家族”は大きくなっています。

そしてどのくらい速く数が増えるかよりも私たちが大切にしているのが子供一人一人の霊的成長です。多くの子供が主を救い主として受け入れていますが、それと同じくらい多くの子供はまだ距離を置いています。前者の霊的成長という点では時折ある喜びと励み、そして日々経験する落胆の繰り返しのような気がします。

感謝の気持ちの現れは彼らの成長を知る上で大切な基準になります。ゲートウェイでの私たちの生活はとても質素なものですが、ここへやって来る前の彼らの環境
を思えば、十分過ぎるものが与えれられ、すべての必要は満たされています。しかし日々彼らの中に見るのは生活全般における感謝する気持ちの欠如です。
ゲートウェイの子供の多くはまだ幼く、精神的にも気持ち的にも成熟度という

点ではとても歳相応とはいえません。そん
な彼らに与えられるものへの感謝の気持ちを過度に期待するのは無理があるのかもしれません。それでもこれは彼らがゲートウェイにやって来てまず何よりも最初に教えることですし、私たちと共にある限り教え続けます。いずれ主を知る上で大切な一歩であると信じているからです。目で見ることのできる物質的な恵みや様々な機会に対する感謝の気持ちが持てなければ、彼らを支援して下さる方々の優しさに対して、そして何よりも全てを与えて下さる主に対して感謝の気持ちを持つことはより難しいものになってしまうでしょう。

子供一人一人はとても個性的な形で、またそれぞれに合った速度で成長することを頭ではわかっているのですが、彼らの感謝しない・ありがたく思わない態度にどうしようもないほどのやり切れない思いを感じることがしばしばあります。彼らがまったく成長しないというわけではありません。

共に生活をすることで彼らに対する特別な愛情もあります。ただ子供たちとその彼らを支援いただく方々との間に入り、橋渡しの役割をさせて頂いている立場としては、ご支援によって様々な機会が与えれていながら、そのことに対する彼らの感謝の思いの足らなさを日々目にしていると申し訳ない思いで一杯になります。感謝されることを期待してご支援いただいている方々などいないことはわかってはいても、それでもそう感じてしまいます。

これは私たちの責任でもあります。子供たちは学ぶ為にここにいて、私たちは教える為にここにいます。その意味ではより多くの実りを十分に実らせてあげられていない私たちの力の無さを痛感させられます。ゲートウェイのリーダーとして、そして子供たちの親代わりとしてまだまだ学ばなければならないことが沢山ありますし、私たちも子供たちと共に成長し続ける必要を強く感じています。

お祈りください
1．日々設けている聖書を学ぶ時間を通して、既に主を受け入れている子供たちの信仰がより強められ、主との歩みが一層祝福されますように。　また日々の何気ない交わりを通してでも主の愛に触れ・感じることで、まだ距離を置いている子供たちの目が少しずつでも開かれ、一歩ずつ主に近づけますように。
2．将来的にいずれゲートウェイにやって来る子供たちの多くは既にこの世に生を受け、今この瞬間にもカンボジアのどこかで暮らしています。その彼らが守られゲートウェイへ無事導かれますように。
3．新学年度が始まるにあたって最近駆け込み的に受け入れの問い合わせを受けています。　既に決まっている4人の子供たちにも他の子供たち同様スポンサーファミリーが与えられますように。
4．最後に私事になりますが、現在4歳になるリンのホームスクーリングを始めます。　妻が多くの部分を担当するのですが、まだ生後9ヶ月の聖乃香のケアとの兼ね合いもあり、私が携わるゲートウェイの運営への影響もゼロというわけにはいきません。　職場が居所ということもありその辺のバランスが上手く保たれますように。
皆さんのお祈り・心温まるご支援を通してゲートウェイの子供たちは主の恵みを存分に受けています。また私たちと共に誠実に歩んで下さる皆さんに心より感謝いたします。

Greetings in Jesus’ name!　

It’s been raining everyday, which covers everything in red soil, and often floods our property. Yet, our life goes on. Our children are just about to start their new school year. “Almost” all our children have passed their previous grades. For two, we are still hoping that they have passed. It’s just that we do not get to know until the school starts on 1st of Oct.

It’s been three years this past August since we started receiving children. If all the children we have received still remained with us today, the number would be more than 40. But unfortunately there have been several children who have found life at Gateway “difficult.” Yet, through ups and downs, we have been experiencing a steady increase in number by His grace.

What we value even more is the spiritual whereabouts of each individual and its growth— not how fast we grow in number. Many have received Jesus as their personal Savior, but many still have not. When it comes to spiritual growth of the former, it has been a mixture of occasional joy/ encouragement and daily discouragement.
Development of their sense of gratitude helps us to see their growth in maturity. While our life at Gateway is very modest, considering where they are from, they have been given more than enough and all their needs have been met at Gateway. But what we often see in them is lack, of appreciation in general, or none at all.

As many of our children are still young with their minds more immature than their ages, expecting them to be thankful for what they receive might be a little too much. Nonetheless, when they come to Gateway, this is the very first thing we teach and continue to teach: be thankful. It’s a first step forward to get to know the Lord. When they still do not know how to be thankful for visible materials and opportunities, they might find it even harder to be thankful to the kindness of those who support them and ultimately to the Provider who is physically invisible.

Although we understand all children grow in their own unique way at different rates, we sometimes grow impatient and feel it helplessly unbearable to see their unthankful manners. It’s not that they do not learn or grow at all. They do. We have also grown our love and attachment to them.. It’s just that when we play a role of a bridge between those who support them and the children, we strongly feel for the supporters when we see that the children don’t really know how to appreciate the opportunities they are being given by these wonderful families. They deserve more than this. God deserves more than this. This is largely our responsibility. The children are here to learn and we are here to teach. In this sense, we often feel inadequate about ourselves not being able to help them enough to bear good productive fruits. There is still so much more for us to learn as parental figures as well as the leadership, and we need to grow together with our children.

Prayer Requests:
1． That the faith of those who have already received the Lord into their lives will continue to be stronger and stronger, and their walk with the Lord will be richly blessed through our times of worship and Bible study. Also the eyes of those still distant from the Lord will be open even little by little, and they will get closer and closer to the Lord.
2． That the four children we have recently received will settle down quickly, and that God will provide sponsor families to all of them.
3． We will soon start homeschooling our four-year-old daughter Srey Lin. Though Christina will be the primary teacher, Taka hopes to be able to incorporate some of his time as well.

We deeply appreciate that you have been faithfully and patiently walking with us. Thank you so much for your prayers and kind support, through which our children have been privileged to receive His blessings.

Family Outing - August 2011

Greetings in HIS Name!

この数ヶ月いろいろなことがありましたがそれでも神様は様々な試練や経験を通して日々導いて下さっています。私たち一人一人の上にある主の御手に感謝し、ゲートウェイのために用意して下さっている計画に向かって前へ進み続けています。

リン＆聖乃香（せのか）

ご存知の通り去年11月4日に聖乃香が生まれました。とても明るい健康な女の子です。リンは“大きな”お姉さんとしていろいろ手伝ってくれています。二人が一緒に
遊ぶ姿には心が和みます。

リンは健康を維持し、最近やっと体重が１０ｋｇになりました。ARVの効果も現在のところ持続しており、一時かなり下がってしまったCD4の値も30まで回復しました。ただただ主に感謝しています。

何でも分け合う…

24人の子供たちを世話する上で一つ言えるのは、様々なことが同時に起こることです。喜ばしいことなら嬉しいのですが、そうでないことの方が多いのが現実です。例えば、今この町では水疱瘡が大流行しています。ゲートウェイの子供たちも例外ではありません。この一ヶ月で次から次へと16人が感染しました。最初は隔離しようと試みたものの、この限られたスペースでできることには限界があり、感染を止められていません…

試練の時

妻のクリスティーナが出産に備えてプノンペンに滞在しているとき、私（貴）はゲートウェイでこれまでになかった新しい問題に直面していました。わずか一週間の内に2回強盗が侵入を試みました。単なる泥棒ではなく、私たちが気付いていることを知りながらあえて侵入を試みたことから、安全強化の工事を行いました。

今は鉄柵、レーザーワイヤー（カミソリの刃
を沢山付けたような有刺鉄線？？？）、そして扉や鍵も増やしました。安全強化の一環として子犬も一匹ゲートウェイの家族の一員となりました。まだ小さいですが外からやって来る見ず知らずの人間に対してはしっかり吠えて知らせてくれています。いまだに夜数回の見回りは続けていますが気持ち的には随分楽になりました。

もう一つの試練はハウスキーパーです。妻と私がそろってプノンペンへ行くときなど、１泊でも2泊でも安心してゲートウェイを留守にできるようにと願い、去年の10月に一人の女性を雇いました。しかし彼女の不誠実な性格と行動のため、雇っていた3ヶ月間一度も2人で留守にすることはできませんでした。

彼女の行為・行動はこれまでに雇った女性全てに共通しているという点では特に新しいことではなく、これといって驚きもありませんでした。慣れてしまっているために、“また？”で終わりです。それはそれで悲しいことでもあります。

信仰

しかしこれらの経験のおかげで私たちは少しずつ強く、そして家族としての絆を強めてきました。また、こういった試練がなければ気付かなかったかもしれないこともなくさんあります。建物・敷地内の安全が強化されたおかげで子供たちは安心して過せますし、ハウスキーパーとの数々の苦い経験から、彼女たちに頼りすぎることなく、自分たちでできる限りのことはするという姿勢も身に付いてきました。

そんな中でもっとも大切な発見は主の御言葉へ対する心の乾きです。この3ヶ月のごたごたの中でも、日々の聖書の学びと賛美は続けてきたとはいえ、ちょっとした調整は余儀なくされました。それぞれの建物を隔てるスペースの安全の確保ができていなかったために朝晩の学びの時間は一時的に短くなりましたし、私が用事でプノンペンへ頻繁に出掛けなくてはならなかったために、その際は学びの時間をキャンセルせざるを得ませんでした。

このことは、神様の御言葉を日々受け取れないというのがどういうことなのかを子供たちに教えてくれました。ゲートウェイの子供たちの多くは聖書を開くのにいまだに促される必要があります。当然のことながら、私の留守中は御言葉に触れる機会はありません。
しかし、おかげで彼らは今御言葉に触れたいという強い思いと乾きをこれまで以上に抱いています。日々のさまざまな経験に無駄なものはひとつもない、というのを示す良い例えです。どんなことの中にも何か建設的なことを学ぶことはできます。

3月下旬に日本からのユースチームの訪問を受けます。ゲートウェイの子供たちが大いに励まされ祝福を受けるのはもちろんですが、ユース一人一人の信仰が強められる上でこの滞在を通してゲートウェイが何らかの形で関わらせていただければと祈っています。

　また４月には恒例となった年に一度の旅行を計画しています。今年はプノンペンで一泊二日します。滞在中、洗礼を受ける子供一人一人の心の準備が整えられ、彼らの信仰が主との歩みを進める上で大いに祝福され、強められますようお祈り下さい。

お祈り下さい

1- 子供たちの信仰を神様が祝福し守って下さりますように。

2- ARVを続ける上でリンの健康がますます祝福されますように。

3- 現在研修期間中の2人のスタッフの採用の見極めができますように。

4- 私たちと一緒になって奉仕して下さる宣教師が与えれらますように。

Greetings in HIS Name!

There have been many things happening these last few months, as you will soon read of. God has been pulling us and leading us onward through several different valleys and mountaintop experiences. We praise HIS Name for HIS hand on our lives and continue to press onward for the upward call that HE has impressed on our hearts for Gateway.

DAUGHTERS:

As many of you already know, we welcomed our daughter, Senoka, on the 4th of November. She is now a happily chubby 3½-month old. Her addition to our family has blessed us tremendously. Lin is a wonderful big sister to her (when she isn’t jealous of her) and it is a blessing to watch them interacting with each other.

Lin is doing very well. She is finally 10kgs! And due to her body’s good response to the ARV medication, her CD4 count is up to 30. Praise the LORD for HIS goodness!

SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE:

One of the joys and added frustrations that come from caring for 24 kids is that many things happen at one time. For instance, we are currently experiencing the chickenpox. So far the number of children affected is 16. We first tried to quarantine those with it, but it is next to impossible here since we don’t have separate quarters apart from putting them in a separate room (hence the spreading).

TIMES OF TRIAL:

While Christina was in Phnom Penh awaiting the arrival of Senoka, Taka was experiencing other forms of apprehension. On two different occasions within a week, thieves came onto the property and tried to gain entrance to our living quarters. Seeing their tenacity, it was quickly decided that we need to do more for the protection of all of us here at Gateway. So now we are fortified with extra iron grating surrounding our inner compound with more gates, padlocks and even concertina (razor) wire. In addition to all of that, we’ve also added a dog to our family, Hannah. She is doing well by barking at any newcomer to our property. God is good in that the thieves never did gain access and that we now have better peace of mind with the added protective measures we have undergone.

Another experience is that we hired a lady in Oct as a housekeeper in hopes that Christina and I would be able to leave Gateway together occasionally just one night or two each time; but due to dishonesty in character and action, we were never able to do so in the course of the three months. She left us in Jan. It’s sad to say that whatever she did didn’t hit us hard, nor did it surprise us any longer. She was our 9th housekeeper. Starting from the first all the way to the 9th, everyone we’ve hired has all displayed the similar attitude toward their work as well as to our children as if they learnt from each other!

FAITH BUILDING:

However, all those events and experiences have allowed us to be stronger and a little more united each time as a “family,” and to come to realize things we probably wouldn’t have otherwise. Thanks to the thieves, we have now a better security system, which had long been sort of neglected. Thanks to unpleasant experience with all the housekeepers in the past, we now know that apart from cooking meals, together with our children we are capable of running this place by ourselves.

The most significant discovery of all is the thirst for His word. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, we still continued our daily Bible study and worship time, with some adjustments. We had to shorten both the morning devotion and evening Bible study because the space among three separate living quarters was not secured yet at the time. We also had to cancel these precious times of the day as I would leave for Phnom Penh very often. That helped our children come to realize what it means to not receive His word on a daily basis. Many of our children still need to be encouraged to open the Bible. Naturally, when I am absent, they don’t get a chance to be exposed to God’s word. Now there is more desire and thirst to receive His word than ever before. This is another example that nothing in our life is to be wasted. There is always something positive we can learn even out of unpleasant experiences.

LOOKING AHEAD:

We are excited to receive a youth team from Japan towards the end of March. We hope and pray that this time will be a faith-growing experience for each of these young men and women as well as a blessing to Gateway.

In April, we are planning our annual Gateway trip. This year’s trip will take us to Phnom Penh where we will cram loads of fun and entertainment for all of us in a 1-night, 2-day stay. In the midst of the excitement, we will be blessed with a baptismal service for those of our children who have received the Son. Please pray for the heart preparation for each of those who will be baptized and that their faith journeys will be rich as they follow in Christ’s footsteps.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

1- That God will continue to bless our children in their spiritual journeys

2- That God would continue to bless Lin’s health as she continues the ARV medication

3- That God will help us to discern the characters of the two staffs we are currently monitoring during their initial trial period

4- That God will provide committed missionaries or long-term volunteers to work alongside us here at Gateway.

Greetings from Cambodia! ２００９年もあとわずかとなりました。今回は皆さんの日ごろのお祈り、ご支援に対し感謝の気持ちを込めて今年最後のニュースレターをお送りさせて頂きます。

振り返って

この一年を振り返ると、本当にたくさんの感謝すべき出来事にあらためて驚かされます。どのように祈ればよいのかもわからないようなことまで、神様は私たちのすべての必要を満たして下さりました。ご存知の通り新しい家が与えられ、この家にはすべての女子と二人のハウス・マザーが住んでいます。現在、限られたスペースをより効率的に使い、現在の倍の数の子供を受け入れられるようにしようとしているところです。

さらには夏から秋にかけて、数人のボランティアの訪問を受けました。彼らの奉仕、そして交わりを通して私たちはもちろん子供たちも大いに学び、励まされ、恵みを受けました。

２００９年の初めから、ゲートウェイを去って行く者があれば、新たにファミリーに加わる者もあり、それを繰り返しながらも、確実に成長を続けてきました。

現在の状況

ハウスマザー：現在１９人の子供に３人のハウスマザー（内２人は研修期間中）、目の不自由な未亡人１人、そして妻クリスティーナと私の総勢２５人がゲートウェイで共に生活しています。さらには約１２人の子供たちが受け入れを待っている状態です。この夏より、突然子供の数が増え始めたことを受けて、既にハウスマザーとして働いてくれているスライ・ルアッに加え新たに二人のハウスマザー候補を受け入れました。ただこれが自動的に長期の契約に結びつくわけではありません。この仕事はその響きほど簡単なものではありません。一日２４時間、一週間のうちほぼ７日間（月に二日休暇を取れます）子供のケアをすることを意味します。カンボジアに限らず、子供は愛の中にあって育てられるべきです。　ハウスマザーは与えられた仕事をこなすだけではなく、子供たちが本来受けるべきその愛をもってケアをすることを要求されます。そういった意味では、この二人の候補が３ヶ月の研修期間を終えた後もゲートウェイに残るという保障はありません。この仕事を単なる生活収入を得るための手段の一つとしてしか見れないようなスタッフなら、これまでどおり私たち自身の手で子供たちの世話をすることを選びます。この件に関して、きちんと見極め、正しい判断を下せるようお祈り下さい。

健康面：咳を伴った風邪はいまだにゲートウェイを苦しめており、より深刻な病気を引き起こすケースが相次いでいます。肺炎やPharyngitis, Rhinitis, Sinusitis, Tonsillitisといったこれまであまり聞いたこともないような病名から中耳炎やマラリア、腸チフスといったメジャーなものまで幅広くカバーしています。一冊の本が書けてしまいそうです。うち３人は数週間前に扁桃腺を除去する手術を受けました。彼らの素早い回復に感謝しています。

実り

ゲートウェイの子供１９人中１６人は現在小学校・中学校へ通っています。その内の数人は読み書きや計算、また学ぼうという意欲全般に問題を抱えていますが、多くは学校できちんと学べることを大いに喜んでいます。１年生としてスタートしたドラーは優秀なため、新学年が始まってわずか一ヶ月で２年生へと進級させられました。またクラスで順位が１番、２番の子供たちも多くいます。
その一方で、彼らの多くは手のつけられない野生のサルのように私たちの目に映ることがしばしばです。しかしつい最近、ゲートウェイの子供たちとそうでない子供たちを見比べる機会に恵まれ、そのあまりの違いに驚かされました。他の子供と並んで比べると、ゲートウェイの子供たちはサルどころか天使のように見えました！日ごろの小さな教え一つ一つ、しつけの一つ一つがすでに実を結び始めています。これらの実りは、まだ比較するべき他の子供がいなければ気付かないかもしれないような小さなものではあります。しかし、これは単なる一日二日の話ではなく、主イエスキリストと共にある永遠の命へと導かれる人一人の命・人生です。
子供によっては何ヶ月、何年もの継続的な教えとしつけが必要です。ゲートウェイの子供たちにこういった建設的な変化が芽生え始めていることに感謝しています。

クリスマス

現在クリスマスのメッセージをより深く理解してもらうべく、準備を進めています。クリスマスのプログラムについては聞いて知っているだけという子供が多く、今年は劇を含めてもう少し内容の濃いプログラムにしようと考えてます。クリスティーナは主イエスキリスト誕生のストーリーをクメール語に訳し、子供たちと共に劇の練習をしているところです。プログラム自体はゲートウェイファミリーだけの小さなものです。１２月２７日に予定しています。

感謝

最後に、日ごろから私たちと共に歩んで下さる皆さんがあって初めて、今日のゲートウェイがあることをあらためて心より感謝いたします。

1- 主が引き続き子供たちの霊的成長を豊かに祝福してくださりますように。

2- 現在健康上の問題を抱える子供たちが速やかに癒されますように。

3- 新たに受け入れたハウスマザー候補が聖書に基づいたゲートウェイ独特の子供へのケアを身につけ、３ヶ月後には正式に受け入れるまでに育ってくれますように。

Dear Brothers and sisters, friends and family,

Greetings from Cambodia! As we approach the end of 2009, we wanted to write you to express our thankfulness for your faithful prayers and support.

Reflections:

When we think about all that has happened in this last year, we have much to be thankful for. God has provided for us in ways that we didn’t even know to ask for. He is so good to care of all matters in our lives here. As you know He blessed us with the ability to build an addition which currently houses all our girls and two housemothers. We are currently working towards making more use of the space available that will enable us to more than double the current capacity.

We have had several volunteers come to join with us and not only to help, but to teach us and our children, to encourage and fellowship and to pray with us in this life here at Gateway.

Since the beginning of the year, we have had our share of comings and goings among staff and also among the children here at Gateway. All in all, we have had 3 staff and 9 children come and go. On the other hand, we have continued to increase in number. In January we had 11 children (8 girls and 3 boys). Now we have a total of 19 children (14 girls and 5 boys).

With this increase, we knew that we needed to start reorganizing our means of caring for the children. This led us to start teaching our cook to become a housemother who is now in charge of 10 of our girls. Srey Ruah has proved to be a quick learner with many resources. It is a blessing to have such a self-motivated and caring woman to look after our girls.

All but 3 of our kids are currently in school and they are doing well, with the exception of some struggles here and there in reading and arithmetic. We are quite proud of their efforts and their desire to improve their knowledge (some of the girls in grade 4 who are weak in their reading abilities have asked for additional tutoring). God has blessed one of our boys with the ability to advance from grade 1 to grade 2 within the first month of school and several children are ranked number 1 or 2 in their class.

Life as it is:

Aside from the 19 children currently living at Gateway, we have met with roughly 12 other children who are still waiting to be accepted. Due to the sudden increase since this summer, we have recently hired two more housemothers in addition to Srey Ruah, our first housemother. They have just started their three month provisional period for training. To be a housemother is not as simple as it may sound. This position requires them to be at service 24/7.

Furthermore, it’s not about getting given tasks done, but more about caring for our children in the love they rightly deserve. In this sense, there is no guarantee at this moment that those two ladies will still be with us after three months of training. We would rather take care of the children by ourselves just as we have been doing than have someone who only takes this position just as a source of income. Please join us in prayer that God will help us have discernment in this matter.

Bearing Fruits:

Very often our children look like nothing but wild monkeys to our eyes! But lately we have had opportunities to compare Gateway children with others from outside, and the difference is remarkable, making our children seem more like angels than monkeys; and so we now know that the small teachings and small disciplines we place on our children daily have actually begun to bear fruits already. Those fruits may still be tiny in a sense that we need outsiders to compare in order to realize. Yet, this is about life, which we hope will be led to eternal life in Christ Jesus. We have to understand that some children may need months or years of steady teaching and discipline. We are so thankful for such positive changes growing in the lives of our children. Some of them have even started sharing with their friends at school what they learn from our daily teaching sessions from the Bible. These precious lives have already begun to be used as His beautiful instruments!

Currently at Gateway:

Health: The long-lasting cold still persists and in several cases has morphed into more serious illnesses including Pneumonia, Pharyngitis, Rhinitis, Sinusitis, Tonsillitis and ear infections. We could write a medical journal, I think. Three of our girls have recently had Tonsillectomies and we thank and praise God for their speedy recovery.

Christmas: We are currently readying our children for the message of Christmas. They have heard all about it before, but we are taking it a step further with actually having a program this year. Christina found a play to translate and is currently working with the children to practice in preparation for our Christmas celebration, which will be held on 27th of December.

Expressing Gratitude:

Again, we want to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to all of you: for bridging the gap and standing with us, for without you Gateway Cambodia would not exist!

Greetings in His Name! Please find below pictures to introduce you all to everyone here at Gateway including a brief history. Please continue to pray for all of us here at Gateway.

Srey Ruah (age 34)
Srey Ruah came to us in February 2009 when our previous cook left us. She is in training now to be our first house mother and is doing a wonderful job. We are so grateful for her. While she is at Gateway, her 3 daughters are staying with her parents.

Janna (age 35) and daughter Janny (age 5)

Among the first to arrive and become part of Gateway family in September 2008 were Janna and her daughter Janny. They are both under the program of Gateway. Due to the fact that Janna, only 35 years old, is going blind and has no husband and no family with the ability and/or means to support her and her daughter, Janny (age 5), she came to live here at Gateway.

Srey Leak (age 16), Srey Lih (age 15) and Lynda (age 9)

These 3 sisters came to Gateway in September, 2008. We had heard of their situation as being very poor and with no father present to help work and support the family, they were living in a shanty next to their grandparents’ house. The older two girls were sent to work as hired hands every weekend to earn enough money to support the 4 daughters and their mother (the youngest is almost 2 years old now and lives with their mother).

Phanet (age 15), Srey Nij (age 10) and Sy Naet (age 9)

These siblings joined our family the end of October 2008 after their oldest brother came to live here (he has since returned to living with their grandparents). These were the first of our full orphans to join Gateway family. Their parents died in a motorcycle wreck in November 2007 and had been staying with relatives until hearing about Gateway and coming to live here.

Srey Lin (age 2)

This little one first came to Gateway under a temporary arrangement, but after being here 2 months, we received permission and filled out the necessary paperwork for her to be here. Her mother has HIV and we have since learned that Lin is also infected. Though she is infected, we are awaiting the latest blood results to determine whether or not she will start the ARV medication.

Srey Niang (age 9) and Srey Pau (age 7)

Having been orphaned at a young age, these two sisters lived with their grandparents until their grandmother became too ill to care for them. They heard about our center for orphans and disadvantaged children and came to live here in May 2009.

Dola (age 10)

He came to us in June 2009, a month after his cousins, Srey Niang and Srey Pau, came to Gateway. His mother is living, but since his father died when he was too little to remember, his mother has had difficulty working and earning enough to support the two of them.

Srey Pia (age 7)

When her mother died nearly 3 years ago her father had increasing difficulty to support her and her 4 siblings. They heard about our place and so she came with a brother (who did not want to live with us and shortly after coming left to return home) in July 2009.

Cheing Hoan (age 11) and Cheing Hiang (age 10)

When their mother died by lightening 3 1/2 years ago, their father had greater difficulty working away from home and caring for and supporting his three daughters. They came to Gateway in August 2009.

Srey Leak-II (age 12) and Wuan (age 8)

This sister and brother have been almost completely raised by their grandmother. Their mother left them in her care when she went to work in Thailand and has never returned. Their father has taken a new wife and has had no hand in supporting them. Since the grandmother is quite poor, she decided to send them to us. They arrived at Gateway the end of September 2009.

Roe (age 13), Raj (age 8) and Nij-II (age 3)

Our newest arrivals came mid-October 2009. Their mother has died and their father has been unable to support them sufficiently. When the relatives helping to care for them while the father works fell ill, he found it necessary to bring his kids here.

残念ながら１７歳の青年スィ・ネイを祖父のもとへ戻すという決断を下しました。彼はゲートウェイの子供の中では一番年上というだけでなく、最も勉強熱心な子供でした。このことがなおさらこの決断を下すのを難しくしました。しかし、再三の指導と警告にも関わらず、越えてはいけない一線を意図的に越えてしまったのは彼自身です。彼の引き起こした問題の性質上、他の子供たちの安全を確保するためには、他に選択の余地はありませんでした。このことは多くの試練をゲートウェイへもたらしました。しかし、この残念な出来事にも、神様なりの理由があって起こったことだと信じています。今は雰囲気もすっかり良くなり、ゲートウェイ自身にも以前に比べてある種の安定感がもたらされました。

この出来事以来、すでに３人の新しい子供が与えられ、彼らはゲートウェイ・ファミリーの輪の中に比較的すんなりと入りました。さらに３人の子供を近いうちに受け入れることが決まっていますし、別の２家族からの３人の子供たちについても現在様子をうかがっています。

ゲートウェイでは引き続き一日２回の聖書の学びがおこなわれています。残念ながら、
すべての子供が関心を持って参加しているとは言えません。ゲートウェイでは聖書の学びを強制してはいませんが、中には周りの雰囲気から仕方なくという子供もいます。彼らがメッセージを聞いていないことは容易に見て取れますし、学びの時が終わるなり、建物を飛び出して行くこともしばしばです。しかし、私たちに出来ることは、そんな中にあっても、彼らが主の御言葉に触れる機会を与え続けるよう心がけ、主の真実がいつかは彼らの心に届くことを祈り続けることです。
その一方で、主をすでに受け入れている子供の中には前向きな変化や霊的成長をはっきりと見て取れます。これらの変化や成長の一つ一つはなにか特別に大きなものであったり、急激なものではありませんが、安定して確実な霊的成長といえます。
つい先日ですが、私がマンゴーの木の手入れをしているとき、８歳のスライ・ナエッが一人で祈っているのが聞こえてきました。彼女の個人的な主との会話でしたし、その邪魔をすることがあってはならないと、すぐにそばを離れたので、実際に何を祈っていたのかはわかりません。ただ、一つ言えることは、彼女は誠実に主に祈っていたということです。とても嬉しく、励まされる一幕でした。主への祈りを強制することは出来ません。私たちにできることは励まし続けること、そして、聖霊の働きが彼らをそこからさらに先へ導いてくれることを信じ、奉仕し続けるだけです

この夏休み期間中は、特に霊的な成長を普段よりも意識して祈っていこうと考えています。ゲートウェイのリーダーとしての私たちは霊的に、そして主の真実の中にあって成長し続けなければいけません。また、ゲートウェイの子供たち一人一人が主とのより個人的な関係を築きあげ、力強い霊的成長を経験することを祈っていきたいと考えています。

ゲートウェイの子供たちは地元の公立の学校へ通っているのですが、そこではしばしば生徒が教師からお金や物を要求されます。特別なホリデーや長期間のホリデー前に、地元のお寺へのお布施としてお金を徴収されたり、学校を掃除するための掃きぼうきや、雑草刈りの鎌、ゴミ袋、さらには自身への贈り物を教師自ら生徒に強制することもあります。そもそも学校がきちんと用意すべきものを私たちが肩代わりするのは理屈が通りませんし、仏教関係の儀式や慣習のために使われるお金を私たちが払うわけにはいきません。
ここで難しいのは、こうして要求されたものを生徒が提供できないとなると、教師から不公平な扱いを受けることが多いのです。中には平気で生徒の成績評価にマイナスに反映させる教師もいるのです。こういった悪い慣習に対する私たちの姿勢は一貫して変わることはありません。しかし、主の目に正しく映る行いをすることは、時には理不尽な扱いや結果をも受け入れなければならないこと、それでもあえて正しい道を選択しなくてはいけないことを、ゲートウェイの子供たちがきちんと理解し受け入れられるようにお祈り下さい。

夏休みが近づいていることもあり、普段より多い自由な時間をより有意義に使ってもらおうとの思いも込めて、新たなプロジェクトを与えました。子供たちはそれぞれ小さな土地を与えられ、好きな野菜を育てるというものです。与えられた土地、そして野菜を彼らが一生懸命世話をするのを見ると嬉しくなりますし、とうもろこしやかぼちゃ、きゅうりなどの野菜が食べれる日を今から楽しみにしています。さらには、ギターを借りて真剣に練習をしたいという要望や英語を学びたいという要望が子供たちから寄せられるようになりました。

新たに建築中の家（二部屋）も完成間近となり、ゲートウェイの女子・女性はすべてそちらに移り住むことになります。小さな部屋は読書や勉強、または静かに時間を過ごすための空間として使おうと考えています。

この夏から秋にかけて数人のボランティアの方を受け入れることになっています。彼らとの交わりの時を今から楽しみにすると同時に、彼らの滞在がゲートウェイの子供たちにとってはもちろん、彼ら自身にとっても実り多きものとなりますようにお祈り下さい。

Greetings in HIS Name!!

First of all, we apologize for the length of time it has been since our last newsletter. Secondly we want you all to know that your prayers have been felt as you have prayed with and for us. We thank God for you—we couldn’t be where we are without that support and encouragement!

Many things have happened since our last newsletter in March!

Ebb and Flow:

We have had to dismiss one boy, Sy Nay, 17. He was the oldest and most studious among our Gateway children. This made it so difficult for us to have to make him go. However, it was he who crossed a line despite a series of correction and warnings, and from the nature of the problem he caused we had no other choice in order to ensure the safety of the other children. This incident brought many more challenges to Gateway. However, we strongly believe this happened for a reason. Now the atmosphere has changed in a positive way, and more stability has been brought to Gateway.

Since this incident, we have received 3 new children and they have been transitioning well into our family life here at Gateway. We are also anticipating the arrival of 3 more children in the near future and we also have 2 other cases to assess for ourselves the situations and whether or not we will accept them.

Spiritual Currents:

We continue to have our Bible sessions twice a day. Unfortunately, we cannot say that all of them are into it. Although we don’t force them to join the sessions, some still feel obligated to be there. Often we don’t see them actually listen to the messages, and as soon as we finish the session in prayer, they rush out of the building. It’s not very encouraging, but we keep trying to provide opportunities for them to be exposed to His message and pray that the truth of our Lord Jesus will reach their hearts one day.

On the other hand, we definitely see positive changes and spiritual growth in our core children, who have already received Jesus. Those changes are nothing big or radical, but steady spiritual growth. Just a few days ago, when I was taking care of the mango trees, I overheard our 8 year old girl, Sy Naet, praying alone in the ministry building. I don’t know what she was praying about as it was her personal conversation with Jesus and I wanted to respect that by leaving her alone. Yet, there is one thing I saw for sure: she was praying sincerely to God. It was such a blessing to me. We can only encourage – not force – them to pray, and trust that the Spirit of the Lord will work further from there.

Meanwhile, we would like to put our emphasis on spiritual growth. We as the leaders of Gateway have to continue to grow in Spirit and Truth of Jesus Christ. We would also like each of our children to develop a more and more personal relationship with the Lord and experience spiritual breakthrough.

Constant Ripples:

Our children go to public schools, and very often their teachers expect students to bring things/money such as brooms, tools to cut grass, trash bags, etc. as well as special gifts for their teachers, for holidays or Buddhist ceremonies. We cannot provide things which are initially the school’s responsibilities, and we cannot allow ourselves to be part of Buddhist ceremonies by contributing money. The problem is that when our children don’t take whatever their teachers tell them to bring, they can be mistreated, even to the point that the teachers might not give a fair evaluation for their study. Our stance is clear and it won’t change. But we ask you to join us in prayer that our children will understand that to do right things in God’s eyes sometimes costs them in various ways, yet they still need to choose the right path.

Tides of Change:

With the extended holiday coming up between school terms, we have encouraged our kids with other projects to occupy their time. One such project was in the allotment of small parcels of land with which the children were given the choice of vegetables to grow and tend. It is exciting to see them tending their little plots and we all look forward to eating the corn, pumpkin and cucumbers that are growing in various stages. Also, more requests to borrow guitars for practice are coming to us, as well as some added attention to expand their limited English.

With the new addition to our house nearing completion, we are readying the girls for the transition to their new quarters. The second room will be used as a reading/study/quiet room for our children as well as for us.

We are anticipating a couple of volunteers in the coming months. We look forward to the fellowship that we will be able to have and pray that their visit with us will be fruitful to them and also for our children who will benefit from their presence here.

１２月から１月にかけて、海外からの多くの訪問を受けました。まずはクリスティーナの両親が１ヶ月。その間、彼らとの時間を楽しむだけでなく、子供たちとの交流や新しい井戸の設置など、ミニストリーとしても大いに助けられ、励まされました。そして１月初旬には日本からの短期宣教チーム。彼らはゲートウェイの子供たちと英語のクラスに外から通ってくる子供たちにギフトバッグを届けてくれるだけではなく、なんと私（貴）の両親までわざわざ日本から連れてきてくれました。二人とも初めての海外で、英語を話せるわけでもなく、しかも母は左半身が不自由です。そんな二人にとってこの訪問がとても意味のあるものだったことはもちろんですが、まだ主を知ることのない両親に私たちの活動を通して主の働きを実際に見て、経験してもらうといった意味でも、私たちにとってもとても意義深いものでした。 "

ゲートウェイの子供は２人増え、合計１０人に。クリスマス直前に姉と弟の二人を受け入れましたが、ゲートウェイでの生活を大いに楽しんでいる姉とは反対に、弟はつい先日祖母の元へ戻っていきました。もう一人は、生後まだ１９ヶ月のスライ・リンです。彼女は既にH.I.V.の陽性と診断されています。ゲートウェイへたどり着くまでに様々な施設をたらい回しにされてきた経緯から、現在、信頼できる病院をプノンペンで探しているところです。さらには、１９ヶ月にもかかわらず、いまだ７．２ｋｇしかない体重をどうにか増やそうといろいろ試しているところです。

ゲートウェイでは現在、さらに多くの子供たちの受け入れを可能にするため、新しい家の建築作業が進行中です。１月に、カナダからとても寛大な支援を受けたのですが、彼らは私たちが新たに家を建てる必要に迫られていることなどまったく知らずに祝福して下さいました。その時は建築費用がいくらかかるかはまだ知りませんでしたが、その後地元の職人に見積もりを頼んだところ、なんと費用は、その直前に頂いたカナダからの支援金とほぼ同額だったのです。

　このような形で恵みを与えて下さった神様に驚かされ、さらにゲートウェイの子供たちまでもがこの話に驚きを隠せません。彼らはとても寛大な支援金で私たちを祝福して下さっただけではなく、さらに大切なことには、主は全ての必要を満たしてくださるという約束の実践となって祝福して下さいました。経済的にもがき苦しんでいるこの国では、人々の目、そして荒廃した心は彼らの日常の必要性や俗的な富に向けられがちです。

ゲートウェイの子供たちも例外ではありません。しかし、このような証は、その他の“応えられた”数多くの祈りと共に、聖霊のすばらしい働きを、より鮮明な形で子供たちに確信をもたらせます。このような聖霊の働きが、日々当たり前のように起こり、経験できるようなところでゲートウェイがあって欲しいと日々祈り、願っています。

私たちはミニストリーとして成長を続ける過程で、常に新しい教訓を学んでいます。つい先日は、１ヶ月間親戚の家に返されるという罰から２人の子供が戻ってきました。賭け事禁止というゲートウェイの規律を再三の注意と説明にもかかわらず続けたためです。賭け事だけではありません。罰則を与えることが必然的に伴うため、意図的に規律に背く子供たちをどのように厚生させるかは、常に大きく重い悩みとなっています。もう一つは、料理担当として雇っていた女性についてです。ゲートウェイのリーダーシップに害をおよぼし、私たちのミニストリーとしての価値観に根本的に反する彼女の人としての姿勢に悩み、祈り続けていました。するとある日突然、健康上の理由から彼女の方から辞めたいとの申し出がありました。話しがあったその日の夕方には出て行ってしまうという、かなり突然なものでしたが、３週間という早さで新しいスタッフが与えられました。この新しいスタッフ、スライ・ルアッは、もちろん料理ができるという条件で働いてもらっていますが、仕事以外の面でも子供たちにとてもいい影響を与えてくれていて、とても感謝しています。

ハレルヤ！つい最近、３人がイエス様を受け入れました。一番年上の子供がすでに主に従う決断をしているため、合計で４人が主の救いを受け入れたことになります。彼らの日々の生活の中にはすでに沢山の変化が見て取れます。現在、月曜の夜を除いて毎朝、毎晩、聖書の学び、そして賛美と祈りの時間を設けています。朝５時半の学びに、何人の子供たちが姿を見せるのか、またどのくらい続けられるのか、正直なところあまり大きな期待はしていませんでした。学びの時間に参加するよう強制するようなことはしません。ただ、彼らが現れる現れないとにかかわらず、私たちはそこにいるようにしています。

しかし、驚いたことに５：３０AMどころか、その前に現れ、私たちを質問攻めにするくらいです。主の御言葉を学ぶことにそれだけ喜びを感じています。夜の学びの時間でも、私たちが一方的に教えるだけというよりは、むしろその日の学びに対して彼らから多くの反応を見て取れるようになってきましたし、時間をオーバーして教え続けることもしばしばです。

現在、ゲートウェイからバスで７時間近く離れた海辺の町への３泊４日の旅行を計画中で、滞在中にはこの新しい命を授かった４人の子供たちは海で洗礼を受けます。４月７日の火曜日午前中です！

ゲートウェイの位置するコミュニティーへの奉仕をどのような形でおこなっていくか、祈っているところです。当初は、英語のクラスをこのコミュニティーへの奉仕、そして彼らと良い関係を築くという手段の一つして取り入れてきました。しかし、生徒たち自身の取り組む姿勢の乏しさから、英語の授業、そしてその準備に費やす時間は、むしろゲートウェイの子供たちのために費やす方がより有意義であるとの結論に達しました。“家族”としてこの貴重な時間を共に過ごすことは、私たちにとってとても新鮮なものとなっています。ギターのレッスンや様々な遊び、そして時間や場所に関係なく自然と始まる聖書の学びなど。

しかし、ゲートウェイがコミュニティーの一員としてあるべきであるという考えに変わりはなく、それでは“どのような形”で奉仕することができるのかを、祈り、模索中です。

1- スィ・ネイ、スライ・レアッ、スライ・ナイッ、スライ・ナエッの主イエスキリストと共にある歩みが、豊かに祝福されますように。

2- スライ・リンが健康に育ち、また信頼できる病院・医師が与えられますように。

3- ゲートウェイファミリーとして初めての洗礼が祝福されることはもちろんですが、旅行中、安全が与えられ、家族全員が楽しい時間を過ごせますように。

4- 私たちと共に働くボランティアが与えられますように。

Visitors:

From Dec to Jan, we received a series of visitors from overseas. Christina’s parents came and stayed with us for a month over Christmas. We enjoyed fellowship with them and they helped to encourage us as well as add some practical help to our ministry; from interacting with our kids to helping us dig a new well. Towards the end of their visit, we received a short term mission team from Japan, who not only brought gift bags for our children and the children attending our English classes, but also brought Taka’s parents all the way! It was so wonderful to have Taka’s parents with us for the week that they were here and for them to see just what it is that we do and have a better understanding of our lives here.

Growing and Expanding:

Our children have grown in number by 2. Just before Christmas we received a girl and her brother. Since then, the brother has returned to live with his Grandmother, but Wannaa is more than happy to stay here. The other addition is Srey Lin. She’s the 19 month old girl we talked about in our last newsletter. She has been tested positive for HIV and so now we are preparing to transfer her medical care to a hospital in Phnom Penh. In the meantime, we are trying every means possible to help her gain weight. Though she’s 19 months old, she still only weighs 7.2kgs (16lbs).

As for what is going on with Gateway, we are currently building a new house in order to accommodate more children. For those who haven’t heard the story, we received very generous financial blessings in January. They blessed us without knowing anything about our need to build a new house. We had been praying about our next step as Gateway and knew we needed extra space for children. At the time, we still did not know how much it would cost to build a new house, but when we met with a builder, we found that the cost would be almost exactly the same amount as the funding we had just received a little earlier.

We have been amazed by the way God has blessed us, and our children have been astonished by this story. They have blessed us not only with their generous funding, but more so by being part of His promise of providing all our needs according to His plan, not ours. In this economically disadvantaged country, people’s eyes and devastated hearts are more focused on their physical and earthly wealth. Our children are no exception. However, a testimony such as this, along with other answered prayers, so powerfully convinces them with clear evidence of the movement of the Holy Spirit. We want to experience this as a daily occurrence in our life here at Gateway.

Growing Pains:

We constantly receive lessons as we continue in this ministry. Two of our girls have just returned from a month at home. They were sent home because they were caught gambling, which is something we have taught against since receiving them. Intentionally disobeying our rules is inevitably followed by punishment, which has been very heavy on our hearts. Helping them develop the ability to make right decisions in their daily life has been an ongoing challenge for us.
Another lesson that we experienced was the loss of our cook. There were many issues which we had with her regarding her attitude and work ethic which was constantly undermining Gateway’s leadership and core values of our ministry. While we were praying about the situation, she decided to leave of her own volition. It was rather sudden notice (she left the same day she told Christina) and we were without a staffed cook for 3 weeks. Now we have a cook, Srey Rueh, who has been doing a wonderful job cooking delicious meals and being a positive influence for our kids.

New Spiritual Growth:

Praise the LORD! Recently three of our children have received Jesus into their life. As our oldest boy had decided to follow the Lord earlier, four children have been saved in total. There have been a lot of very positive changes in their everyday lives. Now we have morning devotions before breakfast everyday, and Bible study with a short message every evening except Mondays. We wondered how many of them would show up, especially for the morning devotion at 5:30am and how long they will continue coming. We don’t force them to join but we make sure that we are there and available anyway.

To our surprise, they even show up before the time and shower us with questions. They are so excited to learn His word! Our evening teaching sessions have become more and more interactive and usually go overtime. Now we are planning on making a 3 nights-4 day-trip to Sihanoukville (a beach town 7 hours’ drive from Gateway) before the Khmer New Year holiday, and have a baptism service in the ocean.

Concern for Future Growth:

We continue to pray for guidance in terms of giving to our community. While we used our English teaching as a means for bringing not only a service to the area, but also to build relationships, we saw, through the attitudes of our students, that our time would be much better employed in spending time with our own children. It is refreshing for us as a family to spend this quality time together, which can have many faces: from guitar lessons, to playing games to having impromptu Bible lessons. This being said, we still desire to be a part of the community and are praying for guidance and discernment to know what shape that “part” will be.

1- That God will bless Sy Nay, Srey Leak, Srey Nij and Sy Naet in their spiritual growth as they learn to walk in their new faith in Jesus

2- That Srey Lin would continue to grow healthily and that we would find the best hospital and doctor for her care

3- That our family vacation will be blessed as we incorporate the very special baptism service

4- God will send volunteer(s) to serve alongside with us

Gateway Orphanage

～ゲートウェイ孤児院～

カンボジアの首都プノンペンから車で約3時間。コンポン・チャム州のチョムカー・ルー地区、ボッ・クナオ町、ドップ・メアッカラー村に入ると間もなく、明るい青と白のペンキが塗られた「ゲートウェイ」が見えてきます。

ゲートウェイの創立者は２年半前にカンボジアにやってきたミヤノ宣教師夫妻。旦那よりクメール語が達者な白人のクリスティーナさんと、見た目は現地人のようなのに日本語と英語を流暢に話すタカさんは、内実ともにユニークなカップルです。

タカさんは、大学卒業後イギリス・スーダンなど様々な国のNGOでボランティアを続けたそうです。しかし、経験がなければ雇ってくれない「お高い」NGOや、高給取りの政府支援機関が、被支援国との間に見えない壁を作っていることに疑問を抱き、また、だまされても感謝されなくともただ無償に人に施すことのできない自分の限界を身にしみて感じたといいます。

この数年間の国際的ボランティア活動を通してタカさんが必要としていた「経験」は得られましたが、タカさんの心には今だ満たされない「虚しさ」が残っていたといいます。そのタカさんを救ったのは、彼が「援助」しているはずのカンボジアの国で出会ったクリスチャン団体でした。
そこでキリストの愛に出会い、人への支援と信仰を両立できるこの「宣教師」という天職を発見したそうです。

後にカナダの神学校にて妻・クリスティーナさんと出会い、結婚後数カ月後に不思議とまたこの国カンボジアへと帰ってくることとなります。カンボジアに来て、いつ・何を・どのように宣教活動をするのか・・・若い二人は何も知らずにやってきました。宣教師仲間のミニストリーを手伝い、カンボジア人、文化、彼らの必要性などを学ぶ中、教会を基盤とした孤児院「ゲートウェイ（Gateway）」を始めるビジョンが与えられたといいます。

ゲートウェイは正確には、孤児院ではなく教会です。ここでのすべての活動・生活にキリストが臨在し、聖書の教えが生活すべてを通して具現化され、孤児、そして恵まれない子供たちが愛と信仰によって育てられることを第一の目的としています。

ゲートウェイの主な活動

１：ゲートウェイ孤児院
　宮野夫妻のかねてからの祈りが応えられ、2008年夏にゲートウェイでは孤児、そして恵まれない子供たちの受け入れが始まりました。ゲートウェイの子供たち一人一人は、海外のスポンサーファミリーの援助により教育・生活が支えられ、また教会が基盤となる孤児院での共同生活により、神様の愛を教えられ霊的にも成長していきます。海外スポンサープログラムに興味のある方は、『スポンサープログラム』をご覧ください。

２：未亡人の為の長短期保護施設
ゲートウェイでは、離婚・死別などの理由から未亡人となった、特に子ども連れの女性たちの長短期滞在も受け入れています。

３．小さな日曜礼拝
この地域には子供や若者を意識した形でのプログラム、また日曜礼拝をおこなう教会がありません。そこでゲートウェイに住む子供たちのための小さな日曜礼拝を始めました。まだ教会として登録していないゲートウェイは、そういったプログラムに公な形で外から人を招くことはできません。主の生きた御言葉と共に、少しずつ芽が育まれ、いずれは地域に住む多くの子供たち、若者を招いた、主への愛と喜び、そして活気に満ちた教会を立ち上げる日が来ることを祈っています。

これらのプログラムを支えるために、ゲートウェイでは長期で私たちと共に奉仕して下さる方を求めています。もちろん短期でいらっしゃる方も大歓迎です。

Greetings in His name!

Today we have a bit of news we would love to share with you.

Gateway has just received 1 widow, her daughter and 3 other children to live with us. We would like to ask you to join us in prayer that they will settle down in this new environment soon and start developing a sense of one family under the care of Gateway. The Lord is indeed increasing our boundaries. As you know we have already begun to help with the care of Lym and Rasmey, so now this brings the number of Gateway children and widows to 7 people. God is good!

We would also like to ask you to pray that each of these four children will find sponsor families. Each Gateway child is to be supported by a sponsor family overseas. There are more children in Boh Khnao commune as well as in the surrounding areas who seem to meet our conditions. Finding sponsor families for these four children will allow us to take more children who need help.

All the children living now at Gateway do have mothers. However, knowing that they do not have the means to take care of their children’s wellbeing, they have come and knocked on Gateway’s door. Generation after generation, the poverty stricken cycle of life has long been passed down to these children. We would like so much to see the end of it as they come under our care and start living a life in which they can have hopes and dreams.

　神様は、私たちの活動領域をますます広げています。いつか皆さんにお知らせしましたが、エイズを患い働くことのできない未亡人のリムさんとその息子のラムジー君（11歳）を今月上旬に受け入れたので、今Gatewayの未亡人と子どもの人数はこれで7人になりました。

Gateway Beginnings - Newsletter Aug. 2008

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

Greetings in HIS Name! Though time has passed, and things have changed in our lives, there is the still nagging sense of questioning our position here seeing as we have yet to find children to come and live together with us here at Gateway. There are many things happening, but at the same time, there is a sense that it is not enough and that we can do so much more.

Youth Outreach

The weekly Bible study at the local church we attend and the daily Bible study at Gateway have been temporarily stopped partly because it is difficult to find time blocks in which students are available due to their school schedule but also – largely – because of their lack of interest in learning.

At this very early stage of our ministry, we cannot spare the time blocks we use for English teaching and use them for Bible teaching. We strongly feel the need of developing more personal relationships with the youths in the community before starting substantial teaching of the Bible. On way to making such relationships deepen and ripen, we have begun several programs for the youth to attend.

Now Gateway has started a youth program both on Sat and Sun, which is consisted of a series

of activities:

1. Teaching English worship songs: Christina has been blessed to use her musical gift. Though it has a core attendance of about 8 students, we are still praying for direction as to how this may turn into an actual singing group.

2. Sharing biblical messages: We try to incorporate short but profound spiritual messages before they get into the sports/games – We won’t let them go home without having them hear about His truth! We do our best, but ultimately whether or not they give serious thought to the teachings is left to each individual AND of course the work of the Spirit of the Lord. They are usually attentive to listen (as long as it is short in duration!). Please pray that these “pearls of wisdom” will become seeds of the gospel planted firmly in their hearts

3. Playing sports and games: This has been widely and enthusiastically received with the numbers at times surpassing 50! We have a variety of things for them to choose from and we try to have everyone play one game all together (like Capture the Flag or Ultimate Frisbee).

4. Agape Supper: We have Agape Supper every Sunday after all those activities above, the latest of which had 40 students attend.

Gateway Boarding House

As you know, we are not strictly an “orphanage” in the sense of the word since we are aiming to help disadvantaged children (who may or may not have one or both parents).

We still believe that parents and children - a family - should live together and not to be separated. However, under the circumstances where Gateway is placed, it would be very difficult for us to support such families outside Gateway property. When people get to know that they might be able to receive help, some come to us with varieties of stories which make us cry in order to secure our support. However, those stories are often exaggerated if not outright lies. Sadly this is what we often experience here.

As we want to make sure all the funds which are entrusted to us will be used correctly as they are initially intended, we have to ask the children to live at Gateway.

Another group of disadvantaged people are the poor widows with children who have little or no opportunity to care for their children’s basic needs and send them to school on their own efforts. In this way Gateway’s “gate” has opened wider.

Opened just a WEE bit wider:

While Gateway Boarding House accommodates widows and their children in cases where they have no home of their own, there are those who have their own home, yet are still unable to send their children to school or feed them sufficiently. Therefore, we have decided to open our door more widely to encompass poor widows and their children who currently live outside Gateway property on condition that they are incapable of working due to illness or disability in an attempt to minimize a possible risk of Gateway being manipulated.

Reaching Further Out:

Our English program is primarily for youths and children, and the Boarding House is for children and widows in need. However, there are people whose needs our existing programs do not meet. For this reason, we would love to receive short term medical teams from time to time. A medical ministry will definitely help us reach out to those we are currently unable to reach and to expand the range of people Gateway could serve. Please join us in prayer.

Upcoming events:

1) - Another difficulty we have been facing over the last several months is that we have learnt that there are orphans or children whose relatives or parents are unable to send them to school. But many of those relatives or parents do not understand their children need an education. “We cannot afford to send our children to school, but they do not need it.,” is a common response. While they do not understand why their children need to receive an education, we as a mere NGO cannot do anything directly about this frustrating situation. It seems that we are led to the river but not allowed to drink.

This is why we are now planning to meet with each of the 12 village leaders and the commune leader to more articulately explain the people whom Gateway would like to serve in terms of accommodating people here at Gateway.

2) - We are praying about and will begin canvassing the area to see if people would be welcome to us opening a day care center for the pre-school children. We are praying about the format and schedule for such a day care center.

3) - The Church that we attend is having a youth retreat Aug 13-15 and we will be joining them in support and to continue building relationships with the youth.

Prayer Request:

1- God will lead us to orphans/disadvantaged children and widows with children or lead them to us.

2- For continued wisdom and discernment with the youth ministry

3- For new projects to serve our community better, that they would be met with enthusiasm and that we would be good stewards of the land that God has given to us (opening it up for a Day Center)

4- God will send volunteer(s) to serve alongside with us

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

Greetings in HIS Name! As you will see in this newsletter, much has happened in the two months since we last wrote. God has been good to us, seeing us through some tough lessons, some huge surprises and some anxieties about ministry.

Killing Field:
One day in April, a Khmer family from Phnom Penh came to our door and told us that a couple of large holes on our property were used to kill many of their family members and relatives including their parents together with many others, and the bones are still buried. Actually this middle aged gentleman and his sister were the only ones who miraculously survived from their family. They shared with us what actually happened on “that day” with tears and emotion and “How the old people (who lived in the village before Khmer Rouge) turned against the new people (who moved in after Khmer Rouge).” The atrocities committed by Khmer Rouge seems to be just a part of history to the new generation today, but remains fresh and real still for so many people after almost 30 years.

We believe that God has brought us here for many purposes and this is one of them. Please pray with us that even when the horrific memory of those who suffered cannot be erased as if it didn’t happen, the love and grace, and goodness and righteousness of our Lord will be expressed powerfully through Gateway and eventually will overcome and overwhelm people’s indescribably deep grief and sorrow and bring ultimate peace and comfort into their hearts.

English Teaching:
We began opening our doors for English classes on the 1st of May—which also turned into an overwhelming surprise. We had initially wanted to start with one class a day for one hour, but when over 100 students showed up, it quickly became apparent that our ministry shade/school room (which holds 40 comfortably) was too small for such a challenge. So, with some quick thinking, we opened up with more lesson times and with classes meeting every other day, and overall, we were blessed with nearly 300 students in 7 different classes. However, mercifully, we have seen the numbers of students dwindle down to just over 250 students for this first term of classes (which will end at the end of July).

Ministry Prospects:
We have begun attending services at one of the Khmer Churches near here. It is wonderful to be a part of the family of believers and we are looking forward to seeing how this relationship develops and how we might serve this “family.”

Furthermore, two opportunities presented themselves this last Sunday when the worship leader expressed that his daughter is interested in learning the Bible in English. This has been the very thing which we have been praying about and has been consuming our thoughts lately—to teach the Bible to students. We are still working out the details, as we want to have more than just one student to learn.

The second ministry opportunity came directly from the pastor who asked Taka to spend an hour on Saturdays leading a Bible class of some sort. We praise God for opening doors when we pray for such doors to open!

We have also been discussing the possibility of starting a choir group among the youth and teaching them English praise and worship songs. This would be an outreach that teaches English, but also brings the message of a relationship with God who loves us and made a way for us to be saved from our sins through Jesus Christ. Again, these are still in the praying and preparation stages and we ask that you would join us in praying for doors to open according to God’s planning and God’s timing.

As you might notice, apart from leading a Bible class at the church we attend, all the other programs taking place at Gateway are intertwined with English because we are not yet able to register Gateway as a church. However, English happens to be the very language people here in general would like to learn, but on the other hand, their ability to understand English is very limited especially in a village such as ours. Those programs cannot be carried out without using Khmer language. This allows us to have more freedom to share the truth of our Lord Jesus Christ in their own language despite Gateway’s official status.

Orphans:
You know that we had a brief and sad experience with two orphan girls – Srey Peu and Srey Neang just over a month and a half ago when their sisters decided to take them back to P.P. They no longer live where they used to, and we do not know where they have gone. We continue to ask you to pray for them as their living environment is far from ideal. As for Gateway, we still do not have any children, but we’re praying to God and waiting for Him to fill this place with children.

We rely on people we know to help us find orphans and disadvantaged children and are currently following up on 4 different cases; two of which are babies. We know that everything is in God’s hand and it will all unfold and Gateway will be filled according to God’s plans and God’s perfect timing. We trust HIM and we continually give over this ministry to Him, because it is His—not ours.

Meanwhile, we use whatever we have and whatever has been made available before us to share the gospel and hoping and trusting that Gateway will be used AND has already been being used even just as a tiny part of His enormous plan to expand His Kingdom.

Volunteer(s):
We would love to receive a volunteer or two: one for English teaching program and the other for a choir group. Whether it’s for a short time (1 or 2 weeks) or for a longer time (a month or more), help of volunteer(s) would be greatly appreciated. If you happen to know someone who might be interested in joining us in this capacity, please let us know. Or if you are the one and the Spirit of the Lord speaks to your heart, we would love to hear from you.

Prayer Requests:
1- God will lead us to orphans/disadvantaged children or lead them to us.

2- As opportunities rise for us to teach the Bible and to have other outreach and serving opportunities in the community arise, that God will lead us and give us wisdom and energy

3- Pray for Sroh’s walk with God and for us to continue to encourage this new life in Christ that she has.

4- God will send volunteer(s) to serve alongside with us

主にある兄弟姉妹の皆様！
　前回の報告の後、２ヶ月間に様々なことがありました。つらい試練、思いがけない出来事、ミニストリーへの不安などの中でも、神様はいつもよくして下さいました。

<キリング・フィールド>
　４月に、あるクメール人の家族がブノンペンから私たちの教会にやってきました。私たちの敷地の中には大きな穴がいくつかあるのですが、それらは彼らの両親、家族、親戚の多くが殺された時のもので、遺骨が今でもまだ埋まっているというのです。この中年の男性とその姉妹は、奇跡的に家族の中で生き残った２人でした。彼らは「その日」に実際に何が起きたか、つまり、古い人（クメール・ルージュ、ポルポト派、の支配以前から村に住んでいた人）が新しい人（クメール・ルージュの後に村に移り住んだ人）にどのように攻撃したかということを涙ながらにお話ししてくださいました。クメール・ルージュによってなされた残虐な出来事は、若い世代の人たちには単に歴史の一部のようにしか感じられないかもしれませんが、多くの人々にとっては約３０年を経過した今でも、まだ生々しく感じられるのです。
神様はいろいろな目的をもって私たちをここに遣わされたと思いますが、このこともその一つだと感じています。苦しめられた人々が、そのおそろしい記憶をまるで何もなかったかのように消すことはできないとしても、主の愛と恵み、善と正義が私たちゲートウェイの活動を通して力強くあらわされ、ついには、人々の言い表せないほどの深い悲しみや嘆きをも覆いつくして、その心の中に平和と慰めがもたらされますよう、どうぞお祈りください。

<英語クラス>
　私たちは５月の１日に英語のクラスを始めましたが、このことを通しても驚くべきことが起きました。私たちは初め、１時間のクラスを１日に一回のみ行うつもりでした。ところが、100名以上の生徒が集まり、用意していた部屋（４０名が適当）では小さすぎることがすぐにわかりました。そこで、計画を変え、授業の数を増やし、授業は１日おきになるようにしたところ、主に祝されて７つのクラスに全部で300名近くの生徒が集まりました。しかし主の憐れみで、生徒数は少し減って、１学期は250名を少し越えるくらいとなっています（１学期は７月末で終了します）。

<これからの働き>
　私たちは近所のクメール人の教会に通い始めました。神を信じる家族の中にいられることは、すばらしいことです。この関係が広がり、私たちがこの「家族」にどのように仕えていくことができるか、これから楽しみです。

また、先週の日曜日に新しいことが二つありました。賛美リーダーから「娘が英語で聖書の学びをしたいと言っていると」伝えられたのです。子どもたちに聖書を教えることは、まさに私たちがずっと祈り続けていたことでした。たった一
人だけでなく、もう少し他の子も来られるよう、今詳細を検討中です。
もう一つの働きは、牧師先生が直接タカに頼んだものです。土曜日に１時間聖書の学びのようなものをしてくれないかということでした。そのような機会を与えて下さいという私たちの祈りにこたえてドアを開けて下さった主をほめたたえます！
私たちはまた、若い人たちの聖歌隊を始められないか、彼らに英語の賛美を教えられないかと話し合っています。これは英語を教える場をひろげるだけでなく、私たちを愛し、イエス・キリストを通して私たちを罪から救い出して下さった神様との関係を伝えるものです。まだ祈りと準備の段階ですが、神様の時とご計画によって、扉が開かれるよう、どうぞ共に祈ってください。
　皆さんもお気づきと思いますが、出席している教会の聖書の学び会以外、ゲートウェイで行われている活動はすべて英語と関係して行われています。それは、ゲートウェイがまだ教会として登録できていないからです。英語は現地の一般の人が学びたい言語でありますが、その一方で英語の理解力は大変限られています。特に私たちのところのような田舎ではそうです。こうした英語のプログラムは、クメール語を使わないで行うことはできません。このことによって、ゲートウェイが教会でないという立場にも関わらず、私たちはより自由に、主イエスキリストのことを彼ら自身の言葉で伝えることができるのです。

<孤児たち>
私たちのところにいた２人の孤児の姉妹、Srey Peu and Srey Neang については、悲しい体験となりました。彼女たちの姉が一ヶ月半ほど前に、彼らをプノンペンに連れて帰りました。以前のところにはもう住んでおらず、私たちは彼らがどこに行ってしまったのかわかりません。彼女たちがどのように生活しているか想像することもできませんので、ぜひ続けて彼らのためにお祈りください。ゲートウェイとしては、今一人も子供はいませんが、祈り続けて、主がここを子供たちで満たして下さるのを待っています。
　孤児や恵まれない子供たちを探し出すのに、知人の助けに頼っていますが、現在４つのケースに関わっています。そのうち二つは赤ちゃんです。すべてのことは主の御手のうちにあり、すべてがいずれ明らかになり、ゲートウェイは神の時とご計画に従って、すべてが満たされることでしょう。私たちは主を信頼して、この働きを主にまかせ続けていきます。なぜならば、これは、私たちのものではなく、主のものだからです。
この間、私たちは自分たちが持っているものは何でも用い、私たちの前にあって利用できるものは何でも用いて福音を伝えました。そして、まだ主の大いなる働きのほんの小さな一部分ですけれどもすでに神の国をひろげるために用いられていることを信じています。

<ボランティア>
　ゲートウェイでは、英語を教える働き、又は、聖歌隊のための働きをして下さるボランティアの方々（1-2名）を求めています。１〜２週間の短い期間でも、一ヶ月以上の長い期間でも構いません。ボランティアの手助けをいただけると感謝です。もしお知り合いの方でこの働きに興味のある方がいらっしゃいましたら、ご連絡ください。また、もしあなたご自身が聖霊の語りかけを受けたならば、連絡をお待ちしています。

<祈り課題>
1- 主の計らいで、孤児や恵まれない子供たちに出会うことができるように。
2- 聖書を教えたり、地元の人々への活動や奉仕が増えていくので、主が私たちを導き、知恵と力を与えて下さいますように。
3- スローが主とともに歩めますよう、また私たちが彼女の新しいキリストのうちにある人生を支え続けることができるように。
4- 神様が私たちと共に働くボランティアを送って下さるように。
